Safety is first and foremost. When arriving in a new country, international students should learn about relevant laws, regulations and university rules first and also how to keep safe and take precautions against crimes. Raise Your Safety Awareness
1. Familiarize yourself with and abide by China’s laws and regulations as well as university’s rules and regulations.
2. Avoid going to places with complicated surroundings.
3. Respect other’s personal rights and dignity as well as different counties’ customs, especially Chinese cultural customs
4. Deal with interpersonal relations properly. When faced with disputes and conflicts, please compose yourself and solve problems with rational communication. Do not turn to violence.
5. If confronted by psychopaths, steer clear and don’t tease, laugh at or irritate them to avoid being injured.
6. In case of danger or emergency, please call 110 or 2510110 (Police station in Daxue road on Siming Campus) or 2888110 (Security office on Xiang’an Campus).
{Case 1} In 2015, two international students from two universities in Shanghai were threatened by their ex-boyfriends that their private photos and videos would be put online. The police stepped in for investigation afterwards.
{Case 2} In 2016, two international students from Xiamen University had conflicts because of dormitory issues. One of them hit the other, and then the sufferer called the police. After the intervention of police, the former student received punishment of warning according to the University’s regulations.
1. Always be on alert. When walking at night, use well-lit and heavily travelled paths. Be wary of dark areas and try to walk with a friend.
2. Do not lead the way when strangers ask directions. Turn to police for assistance if strangers ask you for help.
3. Do not wear too revealing clothes. Keep valuable possessions out of sight to avoid attracting lawless people.
4. Do not accept rides from strangers or hitchhike to avoid being trapped by lawless person.
1. Investigate the security of your dormitory regularly. Report broken windows, doors or lights to maintenance.
2. Always lock your door and windows when retiring at night. Never open the door at night unless you're absolutely sure who's on the other side.
3. No matter you are alone or stay with your roommates, once confronted, try to keep calm and stop or distract the attacker so that you have enough time to report to the Police and ask for help.
4. Follow university’s rules and regulations. Do not accommodate non-residents without permission. Please follow guest policies and cooperate with security staff when receiving guests in dormitories.
