The Visit by Professor Andrea Bjorklund from McGill University Faculty of Law

On December 14 2015, Professor Andrea Bjorklund from Faculty of Law, McGill University visited School of Law, Xiamen University. She extended a lecture of “The EU’s Proposal on Investment Court and Its Implications on International Investment Law” to the students and attended the meeting with Vice Dean Professor Zhu Yansheng, Professor Chen Huiping and Professor Chi Manjiao for the possible cooperation between the two sides in the future.

On behalf of School of Law, Xiamen University, Vice Dean Zhu firstly extended his warm welcome to Professor Bjorklund. He then gave a brief introduction of our current international collaboration status and explored the possible ways and fields of cooperation with McGill University Law School. He also expressed his sincere gratitude for McGill’s hospitality to our students going to McGill for exchange and study in the recent years.

Professor Bjorklund extended her thankfulness for the invitation and hospitality from XMU law school. She said Nancy and Catherine, one for PhD degree, one for exchange last year, have left with very satisfactory impressions in terms of their good performance in dissertation writing, conference reports and research. She welcomes more students from XMU law school to McGill.

Moreover, Professor Chen Huiping and Professor Chi Manjiao further discussed the possibility of cooperating with McGill University Law School on the platform of Xiamen International Law Academy.

On the morning of May 25 2014, more than twenty faculty members and students from McGill-Shantou Law Summer School visited XMU law school and attended a seminar with Vice Dean Professor Zhu Yansheng, Professor Zeng Huaqun, Professor Qi Shujie, Professor Jiang Yue and Judge Huang Minghe from Xiamen Intermediate People’s Court as long as the students of XMU law school for the issues about law education, academic research and legal profession.

McGill University is an English-language public research university in Montreal, Canada. It was officially founded by royal charter issued by King George IV in 1821. The University bears the name of James McGill, a prominent Montreal merchant from Scotland whose bequest in 1813 formed precursory McGill College.

McGill's main campus is set at the foot of Mount Royal inDowntown Montreal, with the second campus situated near fields and forested lands in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, also on the Montreal Island, 30 kilometres (18 miles) west of the main campus. All the academic units are organized into 11 main Faculties and Schools. The University is one of two members of the Association of American Universities located outside the United States.

McGill offers degrees and diplomas in over 300 fields of study, with the highest average admission grade of any Canadian university. Most students are enrolled in the five larger Faculties, namely Arts, Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Management.Tuition fees vary significantly between in-province, out-of-province, and international students, as well as between faculties. Scholarships are generous, yet highly competitive and relatively difficult to attain, compared to other institutions of higher learning in the country.

McGill counts among its alumni12 Nobel laureates and 140 Rhodes Scholars, both the most in the country, as well as three astronauts, three Canadian prime ministers, thirteen justices of the Canadian Supreme Court, four foreign leaders, 28 foreign ambassadors, nine Academy Awardwinners, three Pulitzer Prizewinners,and 28 Olympic medalists. Throughout its long history, McGill alumni were instrumental in inventing or initially organizing football, basketball, and ice hockey. McGill University or its alumni also founded several major universities and colleges, including the Universities of British Columbia,Victoria, Alberta, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Dawson College.
