19th February 2016 marks the end of the 14th Chinese National Round of the Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, which was held in Kenneth Wang Law School of Soochow University. After three days of intense competition, the team from Xiamen University (XMU) team ranked 2nd among 43 teams with its excellent performance. The well-written Memorials for Applicant and Respondent produced by the XMU team were both awarded “Best Memorial”.
The 2016 Chinese National Round began on 17th February, and comprised the preliminary rounds, the quarter-final,the semi-final, and the final. In the preliminary rounds, the XMU team performed with professional knowledge and high-quality debating skills, and consequently made to the run-offs ranking at 3rd place in terms of the total score achieved. In the subsequent quarter-final and semi-final, XMU defeated Shantou University and China University of Political Science and Law. After competing in the final, XMU eventually made its proud achievement.
The Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, named after the world-renowned international law jurist Phillip C. Jessup, is organized by the International Law Students Association (ILSA). Since its commencement in 1959, the competition boasts a history of more than half a decade, and is participated in by more than 100 countries and regions. With more than 800 schools participating, it is the largest and most prestigious moot competition in the world, and is described as the “Olympic Games” or “Oscar” in the field of international law.
As a part of our strategy to nurture international talent among our students, the XMU School of Law has always been devoted in encouraging and supporting students to participate in high-level international academic competitions. Since 2005, students from XMU School of Law had been engaged in the Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. In the Chinese National Round of the past 10 years, the XMU team had been awarded Champion in one year, Second Place for six years and Third Place for two years. The team represented China in the International Rounds held in Washington D.C. for nine years. In the international rounds, XMU was awarded Best Memorial for five times and Best Oralist once. In particular, XMU was awarded First Place Best Memorial for two times, in 2006 and 2011 respectively, achieving and maintaining the best accomplishment in this award among Chinese universities.
At the end of March, the XMU team will further compete in the international round taking place in Washington D.C., representing China.
