During 8th to 9th this month, the 6th China WTO Moot Court Competition was conducted in SWUPL (Southwest University of Political Science & Law). The competition, sponsored and organized by the Department of Statute of Ministry of Commerce, CUPL (China University of Political science and Law) and SWUPL, is the only one in its kind that involves links with national ministries. This competition, comprising both oral and paper sections and specifying English as its language, aims at helping law students have a better understanding of law of WTO and its conflict-resolving mechanism, as well as picking competent students in case of future WTO conflicts.

There were 14 teams in total participating in the competition, which came from different law schools, such as CUPL Law School, WHU Law School and PKU Law School. In addition, distinguished lawyers and scholars in the field of law were invited as judges for this match, including Peng Jun, the Senior Partner of JT&N, Pu Lingchen, the Director of Department of WTO and International Trade in Zhong Lun, and Ren Qing, Partner of Global Law Office, etc.

After intense battles, the team from XMU Law School made it to final four, ranking 2nd place. Having confronted and defeated the team from WHU, they earned themselves a place in the final. Eventually, the team from XMU Law School triumphed over CUPL and won the championship. What’s even better is that XMU team gained the honor of “the Best Paperwork” and Li Yixuan gained “the Best Debater”.

The XMU WTO Debate Team, established in October 2017, has had five members and a coach so far, and they are: Li Yixuan, a first-year postgraduate of International Law, Zhao Yixu, a first-year postgraduate of Economic Law, Wu Zhiyu and Wei Qian, third-year undergraduates, and Bai Beibei, a second-year undergraduate, as well as the coach Yang Fan, a teacher in International Law Department. They had prepared for the competition for over a month by looking through a huge amount of relevant materials, including WTO cases and reports written by experts, and by practicing their speeches over and over again. During the preparation, they also received assistance and guidance from Prof. Chen who was in the middle of academic visiting in the U.S., and from Prof. Pang. With both external help and their own effort, the team gave a perfect paperwork and flawless performance in the debate, on which judges and other participants made highly comments.
