Integrating Sustainable Development in International Investment Law: Normative Incompatibility, System Integration and Governance Implications, the latest English monographby Professor Chi Manjiao, School of Law at Xiamen University, was published by Routledge Publishing Group in London and New York recently.
The book is mainly about the reason for theincompatibility of the International Investment Law and the goals of sustainable development from the perspective of concept, norms and governance as well as how to make up for it. The book consists of three parts, eight chapters, altogether 600,000 English characters, 216 pages. The first part composes of the history, development and status quo of the International Investment Law and the Sustainable Development Law, as well as the deficiency of compatibility between them. The second part, with integrated methods of case study, rules study and comparative study, focuses on Core entity rules, Procedural rules, Exception rules and Public interest rules related closely with the goals of sustainable development in international investment treaties. The third part proposes that the current International Investment Law should be reformed systematically from multiple dimensions, including amending the core development clause in international investment treaties, increasing the roles of soft law and non-state actors in international investment governance, wiping out “democratic deficit” in making the international investment treaties and improving the mechanism of international dispute settlement. The target readers of this book are scholars, lawyers and policy makers in the fields of international development, international economics and international law.
The book has attracted extensive attention among international academia, and has been recommended by many authoritative international jurists. Professor Jose E. Alvarez, New York University, described the book as “the classic book on goals of sustainable development in the system of international investment law”. Professor M.Sornarajah, National University of Singapore, praised that the book would exert decisive effects on the development of international investment law. In addition, the book review will be published in mainstream magazines on international economic law and international sustainable development law in North America and European.
