After an exciting visit to the Xiamen Fort and a wonderful tour through the Xiamen Township the fourth day was started with a visit to the District intermediate people’s court of Xiamen in Jimei. The visit which proved more sensitizing and educative gave a first-hand knowledge of the Chinese legal system to the participants. Coupled with emotions of joy and surprise the visit to the court was started off well when participants realized the tour guide was a very young judge to the surprise of many. Answering every question to satisfaction, the Judge who showed the participants around the court was not only engaging but at best exuded knowledge on the Chinese legal system and judicial operations. The tour ended with a lovely tea party at the cafeteria of the district intermediate people’s court.
The second session of the day which was scheduled for 2:30pm after lunch was a good return to the Law class. The class was on a presentation the situation and problems of Chinese new criminal procedure and was by Professor Wang Tianmin. Highlighting all the latest developments in the criminal procedures in China the participants were taken through a thorough and enlightening session so as to give them a fair knowledge on the criminal procedure of China. Easily identifying the differences and similarities between Germany and China’s criminal proceedings the participants were sensitized and given an upper hand by the knowledge of criminal procedures in both countries. By the uses of cases and examples the well-endowed Professor Wang made the lecture not only very educative but thrilling and exciting.
The aim of this summer programme was to give its participants a good overview of the Chinese legal system. By this programme a sense of appreciation for the legal system of China and Chinese culture will be achieved. Also the participants would hence have an open mind as to consider Xiamen University law school or better still China for further studies.
