Opening Ceremony of 2016 Xiamen-Trier Summer Program in Chinese Law

On the morning of September 19 2016, the first Xiamen-Trier Summer Program in Chinese Law was open in the Xiamen University Law School. Vice President Zhan Xinli, Director Mao Tongwen from the Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters Office of Confucius Institute Affairs, Chinese Dean Li Yi from Confucius Institute of Trier University, Dean of Law School Professor Song Fangqing, all the attendees and volunteers attended the opening ceremony. Vice Dean Professor Zhu Yansheng hosted the ceremony.

Firstly Vice President Zhan Xinli extended her warm welcome to the attendees from Trier University and sincere gratitude to President Michael Jäckel, Director Professor Liang Yong of Trier Confucius Institute and the students from Trier University for their efforts in co-holding the two excellent concerts in Xiamen University at the 10th anniversary of our cooperation in April. Vice President Zhan Xinli then gave a brief introduction of the history and development of Xiamen University and Law School. She said that Xiamen University has celebrated its 95th anniversary this year. In October, the Law School is going to witness its 90th anniversary. The XMU Law School has always been among the most selective law schools in the country during its 90 years of development and has contributed a lot to the XMU’s internationalization. Last June, Vice President Zhan Xinli and Director Mao Tongwen paid visit to Trier University and discussed the possibilities of cooperation in academic exchange, co-research and students education in the 3-day forum and proposed to hold a summer program in Chinese Law oriented to the Trier Law School. She was delighted to witness the Program open today at XMU Law School and hoped the program could serve as a platform to deepen the friendship among students of the two universities and to promote the academic cooperation with each other.

Co-Director Li Yi from Trier Confucius Institute extended her thanks to Vice President Zhan Xinli, Director Mao Tongwen and colleagues from Law School for their efforts to make the summer program possible. She believed the summer program could not only be a window of Chinese language and culture but also a window of international cooperation for the Xiamen University for further and deeper partnership.

Dean Song Fangqing then made a welcome address. She extended her gratitude for the attendance of Vice President Zhan Xinli, Director Mao Tongwen and Co-Director Li Yi and warm welcome to the 12 students from Trier University. Dean Song briefly introduced the development and history of the Law School and also the detailed arrangement of the Program. She hoped the Program could help the German students to better understand the Chinese law and culture and to make close friends with the Chinese students. She also expressed wishes to further deepen the partnership between the two law schools.

David Praum, the representative student made a speech to express expectations for the future 14 days study and life in Xiamen and Beijing.

After the ceremony, all the attendees took a group photo and toured the campus.

The Program lasts for 14 days, 10 days of lectures in Chinese law and culture and visits to the local law courts and firms and families in Xiamen and 4 days of visit in Beijing.
